Frequently asked questions

Question: Why did ICBC withdraw funds from my account after I cancelled my insurance?

Answer: When you are on a monthly payment plan for your insurance, you are actually financing your premium over a 12 or 6 month term through an in-house payment plan with ICBC. By prior agreement, you allowed ICBC to regularly withdraw funds from your account. The loans are withdrawn automatically, on a set day.

If you cancel your policy one business day before payment due date, the regular payment will not be taken. However if the policy is cancelled as the same day as the payment due date, payment will be withdrawn and balance owing will reflect the payment.

Question: I recently moved to B.C. Can I get a discount on my ICBC insurance?

Answer: You may be able to get a discount. To determine your eligibility, we require a letter from your previous auto insurance company that details your claims experience.

After obtaining this letter, bring it to your Autoplan broker's office when you insure your vehicle.

Vehicle already insured in B.C.

If you have already insured your vehicle in B.C., you can apply for the discount by writing a letter to:

Question: How do I change my address on my insurance policy and driver's licence?

Answer: If your address has changed, your driver's licence and insurance policy will both have to be updated. You must let ICBC know within 10 days of moving.

If you go to your local Autoplan broker, you can request a change of address on your driver's licence and insurance at the same time.

Changing the address on your driver's licence

You can change the address on your driver's licence one of three ways:

1. Online

Use the provincial government's Multiple Address Change service.

2. Phone

Greater Vancouver: (604) 775-0011
Elsewhere in BC: +1 (866) 775-0011

Monday to Friday, 5 PM - 7 PM
Victoria: (250) 978-8300
Elsewhere in BC: +1 (800) 950-1498

Saturday, 9 AM - 5 PM
Victoria: (250) 978-8300
Elsewhere in BC: +1 (800) 950-1498

Note: When you call, please have your BC driver's licence number ready.

3. In-person

Visit any Driver Service Centre.

Changing the address on your insurance policy

To change the address on your vehicle insurance policy, please go in-person, with your existing policy, to any Autoplan broker.

Why is it necessary to go to an Autoplan broker?

Changing your address may affect the terms of your insurance policy. The amount of your insurance premium depends, in part, on the “territory” where your vehicle is primarily used. Moving to a different territory in BC could result in a premium increase, or refund. By going to an Autoplan broker's office, your current territory can be verified.

Ensuring your policy has the correct address also reduces the risk of your vehicle's registration being transferred fraudulently.
